Capital adequacy ratio

A measure of a bank's capital relative to its risk weighted assets, showing its ability to absorb losses.

The capital adequacy ratio expresses regulatory capital as a percentage of risk weighted assets. It tells supervisors and markets how much of a cushion the bank holds against unexpected losses.

Different tiers of capital feed different versions of the ratio, with the CET1 ratio being the most closely watched.
