Duration estimates how much a bond's price will move for a given change in yield. A duration of five means roughly a five percent price fall if yields rise by one percentage point.
It is the main tool for measuring and hedging interest rate risk in a bond portfolio, and it rises with maturity and falls with higher coupons.
