Net Interest Income (NII)

The difference between the interest a bank earns on its assets and the interest it pays on its funding.

Net Interest Income is the core earnings engine of most banks. It is interest received on loans and securities less interest paid on deposits and other funding, over a period.

It is sensitive to interest rate moves and to the shape of the balance sheet, which is why it is one of the two lenses used to measure interest rate risk in the banking book.
