Welcome to Day 10 of the Industry Portal liquidity management course, where we break down liquidity stress testing β one of the most critical tools in modern banking risk management.
In this session, you will learn how banks design stress scenarios, model cash flows under pressure, and assess whether they can survive severe but plausible liquidity shocks.
We explain the different types of stress scenarios, including idiosyncratic events specific to a bank, market wide crises affecting the entire system, and combined scenarios that test extreme conditions. You will understand how shocks such as deposit outflows, funding market closures, collateral calls, and rating downgrades are translated into real cash flow impacts.
A major focus is behavioural assumptions. We explore how assumptions around deposit stability, credit line drawdowns, asset liquidity, and funding rollovers drive stress outcomes, and why governance and validation of these assumptions are essential.
The session walks through how stress testing models work in practice, including daily cash flow projections, liquidity buffer usage, survival horizon analysis, and the impact on key regulatory metrics such as LCR and NSFR.
We also show how stress testing feeds into decision making, influencing liquidity buffers, funding strategy, risk appetite, and contingency planning. The link between stress testing, ILAAP, and Contingency Funding Plans is explained clearly.
From a governance perspective, we cover model oversight, validation, senior management involvement, and the role of committees in ensuring transparency and challenge.
By the end of this session, you will understand how liquidity stress testing connects modelling with real world decisions and why it sits at the heart of effective liquidity risk management.
