Welcome to Day 11 of the Industry Portal liquidity management course, where we step into the operational core of banking liquidity: the Treasury function.
In this session, we explain how liquidity is managed in real time, day to day, and why Treasury is often described as the control room of a bank.
You will learn how Treasury manages cash positions, funding flows, and liquidity buffers, ensuring the bank can meet obligations across currencies, entities, and time horizons. We explore how high quality liquid assets are monitored and how banks ensure buffers can be used quickly when needed.
A major focus is intraday liquidity. You will understand how payment flows, settlement systems, and central bank balances are managed to avoid disruptions, and why intraday risk has become increasingly important in modern banking.
The session also covers funding strategy and execution, explaining how Treasury raises funds across markets, manages maturities, and aligns funding plans with regulatory metrics such as LCR and NSFR.
We explore Treasury’s role in internal pricing through funds transfer pricing, showing how liquidity costs are embedded across business lines to influence behaviour and decision making.
The interaction between Treasury, Risk, and Finance is explained in detail, including how these functions work together through ALCO, stress testing, ILAAP, and recovery planning.
You will also gain insight into Treasury’s external relationships with central banks, regulators, investors, and market counterparties, and why communication and readiness are critical during stress.
By the end of this session, you will understand how Treasury turns liquidity strategy into operational reality and why it is central to bank stability.
