Risk

Operational risk

The risk of loss from failed internal processes, people or systems, or from external events.

Operational risk covers everything from human error, fraud and system outages to legal and compliance failures and external shocks. It is distinct from credit and market risk.

Banks manage it with controls, monitoring and scenario analysis, and it carries a regulatory capital charge of its own.
